750 years ago, the right to hold a regular market in Gravesend was first granted by Henry III to Lord of the Manor, Robert de la Parrok, by a Charter on 12 February 1268.

The Victorian Market hall underwent a major refurbishment in 2016 as the council, helped by funding from the Government’s Coastal Communities Fund, has sought to revitalise the Market’s fortunes within the town. Population growth and high-speed trains into London are adding to the town’s attraction as a place to live, do business and visit.

The Market is open six days a week all year round, offering space for 22 permanent stalls, a café and pop-up stalls for temporary trading, together with positions for street food operators in the Old Fish Market. These spaces create some flexibility into how the Market works, enabling specialist vintage, arts and crafts, local produce and other markets to take place. The programme of markets is growing, and more are planned, especially to appeal to visitors and encouraging repeat visits to the town.

A regular pattern of markets, events and activities is creating a venue for different groups to meet and forming a new social space where local people can come together and enjoy staying a little longer.

Creating a place for small businesses to thrive and grow is a key part of the council’s vision for the Market; supporting them with advice and training and encouraging their use of websites to sell their goods will be an important factor in their success.

The vision extends to the Market being a place that has a regular programme of specialist markets that appeal to visitors from outside the town strengthens Gravesend as a visitor destination. Alongside that, the intention is for the Market to be a social space where people can meet together, buy and sell, and add to their experience of the Town. Greater collaboration between traders, local businesses and the wider community will help to underpin people’s commitment to the Market of Tomorrow.

There are 22 permanent units, 6 Kitchen units and 32 pop up stalls.

Le bâtiment du marché victorien a fait l'objet d'une importante rénovation en 2016 lorsque le conseil municipal, avec le soutien du fonds des communautés côtières, a souhaité revitaliser le marché au sein de la ville. L'accroissement de la population et les trains à grande vitesse permettant de rejoindre Londres rapidement contribuent à renforcer l'attractivité de la ville en tant que lieu où il fait bon vivre, travailler et faire du tourisme.

Le marché est ouvert six jours par semaine, toute l'année, et compte 22 stands permanents, un café et des stands éphémères, ainsi que plusieurs espaces pour les vendeurs de cuisine de rue dans l'ancien marché au poisson. Ces différents espaces sont source de flexibilité pour l'organisation du marché et permettent d'accueillir d'autres manifestations dédiées, par exemple, aux antiquités, à l'art, à l'artisanat et aux produits locaux. La programmation du marché continue de s'étoffer et de nouveaux événements sont prévus, afin d'attirer les visiteurs et de les inciter à venir régulièrement.

L'organisation régulière de marchés, d'événements et d'activités contribue à créer un lieu de rencontre pour différents groupes de population ; un nouvel espace de convivialité où les habitants peuvent se retrouver et où ils apprécient de passer du temps.

Créer un espace permettant aux petites entreprises de se développer est l'une des principales ambitions du conseil municipal vis-à-vis du marché. Les soutenir en leur fournissant des conseils et des formations et en les encourageant à utiliser le Web pour vendre leurs produits sont des facteurs essentiels de leur réussite.

Le projet prévoit également l'organisation régulière de marchés spécialisés afin d'attirer les visiteurs extérieurs à la commune et ainsi renforcer l'attractivité de Gravesend en tant que destination touristique. La municipalité souhaite également faire du marché un espace de convivialité où les gens peuvent se retrouver, acheter et vendre, et profiter toujours plus de leur ville. Une plus grande collaboration entre les commerçants, les entreprises locales et la communauté au sens large contribuera à conforter l'engagement des habitants pour« le marché de demain ».

Le marché compte 22 stands permanents, 6 unités de restauration et 32 stands éphémères.
